Energy Inc. Conference & Expo to Explore Business Opportunities in Western Pennsylvania Energy Sector - August 17

The Energy, Inc. Conference & Expo will explore business opportunities in Western Pennsylvania's energy sector on August 17, 2010 from 1-7 p.m. at Pittsburgh's David L Lawrence Convention Center.

Organized by the Pittsburgh Business Times, the half-day conference, reception and trade show will focus on business opportunities for companies in Western Pennsylvania's energy industry, with a special emphasis on traditional energy sources such as natural gas, coal and nuclear power.

The event will kick off at 1 p.m. with registration, a one-hour reception and trade show. From 2-5 p.m. speakers will discuss energy opportunities in the Greater Pittsburgh Region. There will be a reception sponsored by CONSOL Energy Inc. in the trade show area from 5-7 p.m.

Energy Inc. attendees will be provided with two drink tickets for this reception. The cost to attend Energy Inc. is $99 for Business Times subscribers, $119 for non-subscribers.

Pittsburgh-Based VITAC Providing Closed Captioning for World Cup Streaming on ESPN3

Pittsburgh-based VITAC Corp. is providing realtime closed captioning services for ESPN's live streaming of World Cup soccer matches on ESPN3.com. VITAC captioners are covering the simulcast feeds on both the cable side and the website for the live events, VITAC announced. Captions on the website can be turned on and off and will be seen as live, just like those on TV.

This is believed to be the first time that a cable network has added live captions to a streaming webcast simultaneous with TV captioning, according to VITAC VP of Sales Darryn Cleary.

Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh to Host Free Breakfast Program With Belfast, Ireland Economic Development Representative June 14

The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, in cooperation with U.S. Congressman Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), will host a free breakfast meeting with Mark Finlay, director of the Belfast, Ireland-based economic development group President’s Club, Ltd., on Monday, June 14 at 7:30 a.m. at the Allegheny HYP Club in downtown Pittsburgh.

The President’s Club promotes business in Ireland’s “island-economy,” forming collaborative networks and forging links between the United States, Ireland and Europe.

A chartered surveyor by profession, Mark J. Finlay is a successful entrepreneur with diverse interests and experience across the UK & Ireland, the United States, and Europe. He is responsible for complex project delivery, award-winning urban regeneration, and economic initiatives and is an accomplished public speaker and authority on: relationships with North America, the role of “the City,” the creative industry, and engagement and empowerment of neighborhoods.

Pittsburgh Restaurant Gains National Attention for Serving Only Cuisine From Countries Where U.S. Engages in Military or Political Conflict

Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant in Pittsburgh that only serves cuisine from countries where the United States is engaged in military or political conflict. Its first iteration - Kubideh Kitchen, serving an Iranian street-food favorite - has gained national media attention.

"I can't believe someone didn't think of this sooner," writes Seattle Weekly reporter Jason Sheehan, who sings the praises of Conflict Kitchen on his From the Gut blog.

"Can taste create understanding?", asks Salon.com in an ARTICLE posted on its website.

"The food is served out of a take-out style storefront, which will rotate identities every four months to highlight another country," Sheehan quotes from the Conflict Kitchen website. "Each Conflict Kitchen iteration will be augmented by events, performances, and discussion about the culture, politics, and issues at stake with each county we focus on."

Kubideh Kitchen is an Iranian take-out restaurant that serves kubideh in freshly baked barbari bread with onion, mint, and basil. Developed in collaboration with members of the Pittsburgh Iranian community, the sandwich is packaged in a custom-designed wrapper that includes interviews with Iranians both in Pittsburgh and Iran on subjects ranging from Iranian food and poetry to the current political turmoil.

Located next to the Waffle Shop at 124 S. Highland Ave., Conflict Kitchen is a project by John Peña, Jon Rubin, and Dawn Weleski and is funded by the Sprout Fund, Waffle Shop, and the Center for the Arts in Society.

President Barack Obama visited Pittsburgh Wednesday, speaking about national economic issues from Carnegie Mellon University. He pointed to the Pittsburgh region’s economic, environmental and quality of life transformation – strongly propelled by excellence in technology, innovation and community collaboration – as an example of the bright future that’s possible through deliberate investment in innovative, sustainable solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems:

“The possibilities of where this research might lead us are endless. Imagine a new treatment that kills cancer cells but leaves healthy ones untouched, or regenerative medicine that ends the agonizing wait for an organ transplant.

"Imagine a lightweight vest for soldiers and police officers that can stop armor-piercing bullets, or educational software that's as effective and engaging as a personal tutor, or intelligent prosthetics that can enable a wounded veteran to play piano again. And now imagine all the workers and small business owners and consumers who would benefit from these discoveries.

“We can't know for certain what the future will bring … I'm sure there were times when [Pittsburgh] couldn't imagine life without steel mills and the heavy smog that filled these streets. And when that industry shrank and so many jobs were lost, who could've guessed that Pittsburgh would fare better than many other Rust Belt cities, and reemerge as a center for technology, green jobs, health care, and education? Who would've thought that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's logo would one day adorn the U.S. Steel Tower, or that this institute of higher education would be the region's largest employer?

Spain beats Netherlands to Win First World Cup - Pittsburgh-Area Soccer Fans Celebrate Global Connections

Spain beat the Netherlands by a 1-0 score in extra time Sunday to win first World Cup in mile-high Johannesburg. In the U.S. the game will air on ABC and Univision.
